Softball Spotlight: Marina Carter’s Full-Circle Journey
When asked why she chose Minnesota State, senior softball player and nursing student Marina Carter doesn’t hesitate to share what made the school stand out: a deep sense of community and the unique opportunity to balance athletics with a demanding academic path.
“I chose Mankato, which I really liked, just the sense of community, especially when I went on my visit,” she said. “There’s such a big aspect of lots of people in the community who love to come and support MSU athletics, whether that’s coming to our games, supporting us during MAV week, or through local businesses getting involved.”
But it wasn’t just the atmosphere that sealed the deal. The ability to pursue a nursing degree while playing collegiate softball was a rare opportunity.
“Mankato was one of the only schools that allowed me to do both nursing and softball. That was a big reason I ended up coming here. Our coaches really understand that softball isn’t the only thing in our lives. They know we have professional careers to prepare for, and that’s why we’re here, to build both.”
Originally from Ankeny, Iowa, she started playing softball around age five or six.
“I told my mom that guys play baseball, so we needed a girls version. She said, ‘That’s softball!’ and signed me up,” she laughed.
One of her first teams in Ankeny was special for another reason — it was the start of a lifelong connection.
“I actually played with Ella, who’s on our team now. Our dads coached our first little league team together. It’s such a full-circle, wholesome moment.”
When asked about her favorite memory with the Mavericks, one trip stands out.
“Traveling to the regional our freshman year was such a fun time, just being able to experience the postseason with our whole team. That’s something we’re still working toward this year, and honestly, all my favorite memories come from just being around this team. I love every single person on it.”
To younger players and incoming freshmen, she offers a powerful piece of advice.
“Don’t be the first person to say ‘no’ to yourself. Always be confident in what you’re doing, whether it’s real or fake, the confidence and the experience will come. Trust yourself and buy into what you’re doing.”
Looking ahead, she’s preparing to step into her professional career.
“I’m currently looking for nursing jobs in the Minneapolis area,” she said. “I probably won’t go back to Iowa to work, but I still need to update my resume and get everything ready. I’ll also be taking the NCLEX licensure exam soon.”
From a Little League team in Ankeny to the regional stage with MSU Mankato, Marina Carter has found both purpose and a place to call home.
