Mankato’s Balcerzak Drive survey seeks student feedback for safer streets
The Balcerzak Drive Corridor Study, launched by the Mankato/North Mankato Area Planning Organization (MAPO), is a comprehensive project currently gathering feedback from the public to address key challenges faced by those using the street.
The study, expected to be completed by December, specifically focuses on improving conditions for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and transit users, with a special emphasis on students who walk or bike to campus.
Paul David, Engagement and Communications Director and a key figure in the project, encourages students to take part in the survey. He believes their insights are essential for ensuring that the street meets the needs of its most frequent users, students who rely on walking or biking for transportation.
Balcerzak Drive serves as an important thoroughfare in Mankato, connecting the Hilltop area to other major roads. However, it has faced challenges, especially in accommodating the growing number of people who walk or bike to campus. As sustainable transportation options like walking and cycling increase, it becomes essential to create an environment that is both safe and accessible for all users.
This study will include a detailed analysis of the current conditions along Balcerzak Drive, focusing on traffic patterns, safety concerns, and pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. The team’s main goal is to understand the existing challenges and identify areas of improvement. This will help guide the development of effective solutions and ensure that any proposed changes meet the needs of all users.
MAPO encourages public participation, especially from students who use Balcerzak Drive regularly to get to campus. The organization emphasizes that students are among the most frequent users of this corridor, and their experiences are key to shaping the improvements that will be made. By gathering input, MAPO hopes to make sure the changes meet the needs of the student community and improve the corridor for everyone. The survey covers a variety of topics, and based on students’ responses and public input, potential changes could include safer pedestrian crossings, better bike lanes and more efficient transit stops along the corridor.
By encouraging public participation, MAPO aims to shape a future for Balcerzak Drive that reflects the needs of its community. For those interested in learning more about the survey and how to participate, Paul David encourages students to visit the official project website at https://everyvoice.mankatomn.gov/ to access more information and provide their input.
